Applications for rebates and loans under the WA Battery Scheme are not open yet.
The WA Government is expanding its Residential Battery Scheme to provide rebate support for up to 100,000 households.
The WA Residential Battery Scheme will complement the Federal Government’s Cheaper Home Batteries Program for a combined rebate of up to $5,000 for Synergy customers and $7,500 for Horizon Power customers.
This means State-based rebates will now be up to $1,300 for Synergy customers ($130 per kWh of battery capacity) and up to $3,800 for Horizon Power customers ($380 per kWh of battery capacity). In the first year, and with the assistance under the Federal Cheaper Home Batteries program, residents will be able to receive up to $5,000 and $7,500 respectively towards the cost of a 10kWh battery installation.
Households will be required to participate in a Virtual Power Plant (VPP) to be eligible for the Scheme.
A list of approved equipment, battery suppliers or installers for the WA Battery Scheme is still to be confirmed. Companies and individuals taking action on the assumption of unreleased details are doing so at their own risk.
Batteries installed before the commencement of the WA Battery Scheme will not be eligible for rebate or loan funding.
Important revisions have been made to WA Residential Battery Scheme to expand rebate availability.
The WA Residential Battery Scheme will help WA households with the cost-of-living pressures, providing support to Western Australian businesses and jobs, and furthering the energy transition by supporting the use of renewables.
By 1 July 2025, the WA Government will be offering rebates for residential batteries of up to $1,300 for Synergy customers ($130 per kWh of battery capacity) and up to $3,800 for Horizon Power customers ($380 per kWh of battery capacity). With the assistance under the Federal program residents will be able to receive up to $5,000 and $7,500 respectively towards the cost of a 10kWh battery installation.
These revisions to the original battery scheme maintain both its spirit and budget of $337 million. The reasons for this change are to:
- Allow more households to access rebates and loans available under the WA Residential Battery Scheme.
- Help provide a safe and sustainable level of battery uptake for industry.
- Ensure greater stability and reliability of the WA electricity grid through the increased number of batteries.
No interest loans will also be available for up to $10,000 to households with a combined annual income of less than $210,000. Loan repayment periods will be up to 10 years. Loans can be used for batteries and new or upgraded equipment such as inverters and solar panels, as long as they are installed with a battery.
Batteries with a larger capacity than 10kWh, that are on the approved equipment list (to be confirmed), are eligible for the maximum rebate under the WA Battery Scheme of $1,300 for Synergy customers or $3,800 for Horizon Power customers.
The WA Battery Scheme will be commencing on or before 1 July 2025 and will be administered by Plenti Pty Ltd, a third-party service provider with suitable capability and expertise.
Virtual Power Plant Requirements for Rebate and Loans
Households will be required to participate in a Virtual Power Plant (VPP) to be eligible for the scheme.
Batteries installed through the Scheme will help play a vital role in securing WA’s energy future, with households to be financially rewarded when they share their stored renewable power as part of a VPP.
Through VPPs, households will be able to sell energy stored in their battery back to the market – this will help to decarbonise WA and bolster energy security, while offering financial benefits to participating households.
With the Scheme now extended to support an estimated 100,000 batteries, it may contribute around 1GWh of storage to the grid. For home batteries to reliably deliver benefits to the system they need to work together. This can only be achieved through VPPs, and this is how households receiving the rebate will help secure our clean energy future.
